Sensory integration is a neurological process that occurs in all of us. We take in sensory information from the world around us for our brains to interpret and make sense of. Frequently in autism, there is dysfunction with this process and sensations are over processed (i.e. sounds too loud, sights too bright, smells nauseating, movement and touch scary) or under processed (i.e. child seeks movement, sounds, light, smells, touch).
At SunnyDays Therapy, our therapists are trained to identify processing difficulties in the children we see and adapt their environments to meet their neurological needs. We also provide “sensory diets” unique to each child for use at home and school and provide education regarding sensory processing to their caregivers.
Benefits of the Sensory Processing Program:
• Increased attention span
• Modulated activity level
• Improved mood and frustration tolerance
• Improved whole body coordination
• Enhanced social behaviors
• Reduced tactile defensiveness
• Increased oral motor skills in feeding
• Improved personal hygiene
